The Story Behind "Heart to Heart"
I believe in the idea of social proof, that what the majority are doing will influence the individual and this power can be used for the good of humanity. In Vietnam (and when I say Vietnam I really just mean the bog my family emerged from in the deep south of Sóc Trăng), it was barely acceptable to be born a girl so if you’ve already failed at gender there was definitely no space for any other ‘deviance’. When we were younger, my sister remembers my father not being ok with homosexuality but I remember a moment when my father gave us an after-dinner talk apropos of nothing about how it was “ok to be gay” since my sister and I were both 20-something year old crones and also quite private about our personal lives. For me, what this change of heart signifies is the influence of the Canadian culture of acceptance and inclusivity.
