The Story Behind "Camping"
Years ago I was looking at Facebook photos of a Vietnamese-Canadian camping trip. It was a large group of multiple families, and they had booked campsites on Vancouver Island. Lots of intricate Vietnamese food being made. Lots of morning Starbucks runs. Women plugging in their hair devices. My aunt wearing all her jewelry and leather pants. After being too loud and arguing with other campers the first night they were kicked out the next day. They didn’t seem to follow any of the rules of camping, either provincial or the tacit rules of silence and austerity after sundown. But what I learned when I was in Vietnam is that if more than 10 people gather for an evening then that constitutes party time.
