The Story Behind "My Still Life"
Every year we’d have what I call Daddy Dead Day because it was a great big dinner on the day of my maternal grandfather’s passing. That’s about all I knew. But there was always an altar with all this fruit, savoury dishes and other delectable edibles that weren’t on the dinner table. So I was always hard staring and wondering “can I eat that? I wanna eat that” but I wouldn’t dare ask.
Artist Commentary: I grew up afraid of asking questions. I never asked anything about anything. If you asked a question there was a 79% chance you’d get a mild beating for it. And if you wanted to avoid a beating you’d blame your sister and she would get the beating instead. And this is why I don’t have a good relationship with my sister.
