My mother once told of how in her first year here in Canada she received a Christmas food hamper with a turkey in it. She’d never seen a turkey before and had no idea the symbolism about Canadian traditions that were attached. So she cut it up and made enough curry to last the next year.

And just another thought regarding food: don’t force Hawaiian pizza onto newcomers; let them come to it on their own.
